Landbridge - Landbridge - 2012

Yeah, I know, there has always been many bands playing crusty tunes or somehow having a definite d-beat / crust influence in their sound, and nowadays their number is increasing perhaps since the genre is gaining its popularity ( if talking about the popularity of the crust scene makes any sense ). Anyway, this is something, I'm not afraid to say, outstanding. Landbridge. A band from Tampa, Florida. Trying to categorize the music, which I'm honestly not fond of doing at all, I'd say they play a very, very melodic d-beat. The most obvious comparison is His Hero Is Gone, but Landbridge will be a pleasant listen for the lovers of bands like Rise and Fall, End Reign, Worms Feed as well as the ones who love Ictus, Ekkaia, Madame Germen and maybe even Disfear or Wolfbrigade. Three passionate songs here, full of despair and anger.. ( aaah, same shit from post to post, despair and anger, bleak atmosphere, I need to learn more words or find some new way of describing things!! ). Well, I'm sure you haven't heard a band with such an amazing songwriting for a while, at least I haven't. It is simply awesome. Necessary to say that these dudes also play in several other bands, and each one will be worth your time: Collapse, Crow's Foot (R.I.P), Bastard Deceiver. Can't wait for more music from Landbridge while this record is one of the best I heard this year for sure.

Ok, here i am finally doing what i was keeping in mind for some time - writing about The Conceal. The Conceal is a natural continuation of Flood Peak expanded to become a five-piece, so in case you missed it, it's time to fill the gap.



Endless River | Stunted Prayer contains four reworked songs out of five from Filling Flasks and.. let's count.. six new ones. The reworked versions sound slower, with more stress on heaviness and anguish, but not without rocking impression. New songs are also not just to fill in the space, they are at least as good, if not better as the previously heard. From the very Final Song which is actually the first one, and up to The Waiting these sounds control your feelings and consciousness. And even if you listen to any random song, it will be repeated in your mind again and again. That's what i like.



There is also a great digital layout with lyrics and art included and some beautiful band videos. The visual aspect of The Conceal work is another thing to be pleased with. It perfectly reflects the essence of the project. Looks like these guys founded something outstanding. Dark and heavy shit-rock band with cool past, splendid present and bright future. And whatever you call it, that is still what it is.

Bubonic Bear - Fleshworld - 2011
Bubonic Bear - Half Lenght - 2010

Here is the latest record of Bubonic Bear from Philadelphia. Writing this with great pleasure cause i already got familiar with their creative work and it made a very good impression. Half Lengh was a great listen, Fleshworld is even better. Must say they also recorded two splits: with Hulk Smash and Holy Dirt who's parts are downloadable from their bandcamp pages as well as BB's from theirs. Talking about Fleshworld, it's still that Bubonic Bear style you like ( or hate ). Pretty long songs with not so fast, rather slow but intensive drumming and riffs filling the space like you can even touch them. The overall feel is bleak, doomed and psychedelic a bit which makes it an enjoyable listen. The production is better than at the Half Lenght, someone may wish they made it rougher, but not me. I find it just great. You won't think, but there are only two people in the band, Andrew and Dustin, who i thank deeply for getting in touch. Fleshworld is available from Sloth Tapes if you're into buying stuff.

Transcontinental split between two madly angry bands. Drainland guys are working like at the conveyor, one record after another. Dog Shredder - Boss Rhino EP - 2010

Cobbled together from pieces of lates and greats such as the Russians, Black Eyes and Neckties and, most notably, the instrumental juggernaut that was Cicadas, Dog Shredder is an amalgamation of disparate musical elements that taste great together. Imagine, if you will, the aural experiments of Sonic Youth coupled with a Sabbath-style dB beat down. Imagine the ferocity of punk applied with the precision of prog. Imagine scalpel-sharp arrangements delivered cinder block heavy.

Don't know what to add to this quote. These two songs are really powerful and are claimed to appear on the forthcoming Doorbell Volume album which i'm looking for. Do yourself a favor and listen to this teasing record.

A new band to me but i really enjoy what they're doing. Arctic Flowers is a Portland based band playing some kind of anarcho (post-) punk or death rock with lots of catchy melodies. I decided to get into it after seeing a bright description somewhere, don't remember exactly, and was very pleased with what i heard. Really good stuff.

That's a real masterpiece. The debut record from San Hose based Flood Peak. With Mike McClatchey on guitar who was also in Apiary ( Clearing Autumn Skies before and Early Graves after ) they sound really heavy. I'd say it's like taking part in the bulldozer race where you have to slam the others while pushing gas to the floor, feeling the destructive power and enjoying the speed at the same time. Hope you got it. Record production reminds me of Lighthouse ( their album's here ) but it has more of that Motorhead feel. I didn't listen to it when being drunk but this sounds great anyways. Check the teaser below and you'll surely want to get Filling Flasks immediately.

Amazing record. Enzuigiri were Landmine before, i guess the name change was due to Derrick's ( one of band members ) leaving the city. Landmine demo is up for download at the blogspot link above. I don't know how to describe this stuff. Some kind of experimental hardcore. Yeah, spacey sound, interesting structures, screamy singing. The only bad thing is there are only three songs. Can't wait to hear more from these guys. The new vinyl record is supposed to be out soon, so keep an eye on them.

The in-ring debut from the Mid-Ohio Valley's Enzuigiri. Three tracks of riffy, "spacey" hardcore with lots of yelling about important subjects such as barges and being eaten by a planet. There's even some noise thrown in for some annoyance. This 7" is a kick to the medulla oblongata. Ring the bell.

Since i read the review of the album on AVERSIONLINE i was looking for it and thank you Ryonikis for sharing this. Same-Sex Dictator is band of just two dudes (Justin on bass and Lee on Drums) making some noise.  From Beneath You It Devours is a perfect album having all the psychedelic and spacey passages along with faster grinding parts and duo-vocals singing. It's hard to define the genre, i'd just call it an experimental piece of art.

Nashville's Karoshi come forth with their debut full length. This release shows a much more matured band who have gotten into their own little groove. Frantic d-beat makes way for mid-tempo exploration. Ultra melodic, on the verge of a serious nervous breakdown. Imagine From Ashes Rise listening to Rudimentary Peni, then having a panic attack about it.

Karoshi played their last show not long ago and that makes me sad. I was looking for this release before it even came out, and i hoped they'd record something else because Ichi is an amazing album. It has it's own unique sounding and feel.

A couple of days ago after listening to The Bad Wife once again i checked Julie's myspace and got very excited of the news i saw: she had some more material released! Good news! That was a two song release coming on Coextinction Recordings - an online label organized by members of many bands (Unsane, Fresh Kills and Players club among others) with some  cool stuff and a lot more to come. Talking about those two songs, they both feature John LaMacchia of Candiria on guitars and are full of passionate screaming, whispering and everything you expect from Julie. So she might be a bad wife but she's definitely an outstanding singer. If you're still unfamiliar with Julie's work check the video below. It's for the "Bow" song from The Bad Wife.

Boston based band featuring someone of Furnace (Derrick the drummer, i guess). The band's sound is close to Furnace, too. I'd call it loud and aggressive grinding hardcore punk or something like that... What i know for sure is that Veloz are really intensive and they're good at what they are doing. And the artwork is amazing, just have a look, it's done by Branko Vranic, thanks to him.

Veloz is fast, heavy and intense, almost as if Motorhead had a baby with Converge. Most of their songs are under two minutes long and offer a constant and steady pattern of thrash which the musicians involved have the talent to make worth listening to.

EP of five straight-in-your-face hardcore songs from Heartless - the band featuring members of Cleveland crushers Masakari. While Masakari are working on new material (including split w/ Alpinist) Heartless are not sitting at a place too. They've already had some stuff released (2009 winter demo can be found here) and are working on a full-lenght. Metallic hardcore songs which have some fast and slower parts but are always heavy and full of rage is what we might expect judging by this EP. So keep an eye on these dudes.

The Gift - Mostly In Sickness

The Gift is a 3-piece from Washington, DC who combine sweet melodies with some crushing and searing intensity. Tempo in The Gift’s music ranges from a slow dark lurch to intense bursts.

Once i came across The Gift somehow and followed to their bandcamp page. There was 2010 demo which i liked from the very first listen and downloaded immediately. I was really impressed. Having spent about several months listening to that demo from time to time i decided to check back their site.. and hell yeah, they've got the full-lenght! Mostly In Sickness sounds dirty, gloomy and quite depressive. At the LJ it's written "We play dark hardcore grunge punk rock about grief, evisceration, etc etc etc." and that "funeral grunge" tag seems to be quite exact genre definition. The Gift members played in a numerous bands before and since i enjoyed what i've heard (special thanks to Beck for her singing) i learned more about them and found many interesting things..

Everyone who listens to the record gets very pleased with it. Well, not sure if the word "pleased" expresses what it feels like. I don't know... Just listen to it and decide for yourself. As someone mentioned tis is 15 minutes of pure destruction.
