Hexis - Hexis

Probably one of the most promising demos (?) to come out last year. Black, doomy and heavy as fuck. Some similarities to Celeste may be drawn but this record seems even heavier to me. These hard working gentlemen are planning to release some more songs soon so keep an eye on them.

When you first hit play on Hexis’ self titled demo you’re struck with a barrage of sound that’s perhaps the aural equivalent of taking a mallet to the face. From the get-go, without any hesitance, the Danish outfit unleash an unholy cacophony with this unruly assault.

Making waves inside the world of  black metal and especially its growing niche "post-black metal" is not a simple feat but with A Rage and Rapture Against the Dying of Light, Terzij de Horde have deservedly managed to make a name for themselves, garnering a large amount of fans and perhaps more importantly set the hype train in motion for their next release .

I better like "hipster black metal", haha. But don't think that's anything bad, whatever you call it the thing that matters is what it sounds like. And i must admit it sounds good. With plenty of melody, drumming and screaming common for black metal but with a hint of what could be called screamo probably. There's also a banjo solo between tracks 3 and 4. Don't know why but it seems like they don't speak much on their past as Liar Liar Cross on Fire. Ok, lets keep it a secret..

I'm not really into all those metal things but i do like this record. Definitely a black metal one but with a blend of death metal, grindcore and even some atmospheric moments. Australians do know how to make music.

Dining In Tuscany’s first full length ‘1556’ is a sonic portrait of Rene Magritte’s Empire of Light. Its 6 tracks blend day and night through snarling melodies that bark and purr against the gentle caress of smoked porcelain overtures and vocal narratives.

Tempest - Passages

Seems like nowadays more and more bands try to combine black metal with other genres. Tempest is not an exception. They remind me of Hierophant (Hierophant post), Young And In The Way, The Secret (once again), and even Deafhaven. While the first is a bit closer to punk, the second to hardcore, the third is more of chaotic nature and the fourth is almost a post-rock band, Tempest sound is a mixture of all the mentioned genres. I'm glad they made a free download cause i was looking for it for a long time. Once again Canada confirmed it's status of the country with one of the best underground scene in the world.

Pine Barrens - Demo

Four song demo from Manchester based Pine Barrens. That's definitely a hardcore thing but with a blend of many different genres. Mixing hardcore with black metal, some crust parts, some chaotic parts, that's a sound not many bands can compare and there's a saxophone solo on the last track! In whole this makes a good feel and a leaves a wish to hear more from Pine Barrens. And as it's said at Power Negi web-page band members used to play in Hammers and Beecher, check them out too, if you haven't yet.

Pine Barrens combine hardcore, metal, crust and a bit of grind for good measure, then make it dark, you know… Think Alpinist meets Hammers, or on the wider scale Cursed meets His Hero Is Gone.
